This Japanese temple building is based off the Picture Hall in the Sanzo-in subcompund of Yakushiji Temple, as described by Azby Brown in his book, The Genius of Japanese Carpentry. It was then incorporated into a set design suitable for stage use.
The entire piece was created in Houdini. The goal of this piece was to get a more thorough understanding of what goes into building a structure with the dougong bracket structure and a hip and gable roof, as is typical of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean traditional architecture.
I added some set dressing elements and set the tarp on the roof on fire to make the composition more interesting (and because why not?).
